In the process of researching for my next bit of coursework, I've found myself fascinated by the concept of citizenship and how differently it is approached across Europe. It goes a long way to explaining for me the stark difference in opinion between myself and Linca when we debate ethnicity issues, because the views held on citizenship here in the UK have developed within a very different historical context to France.
So I'll try to summarise some key concepts around citizenship rights, different models of citizenship in some European countries and how this relates to diversity and equality of minority groups, and women. Read more... (68 comments, 1048 words in story) by In Wales
Here we are again! I've been off jet setting once more. This weeks theme could be sights of Italy but that would be a little mean.

I write this diary to try to encourage those who wish to write about their own experiences to do so, especially if it challenges what could be described as the 'comfort zone' of ET. I write it also to encourage those who may pile in with their perspective that anything that is not easily explained by science or that has a 'spiritual' element to it is all a waste of space - that perhaps even so, there is value to the topic or experience.
As most people here know, I am a scientist. I like my logic and my evidence and finding an explanation for why things do the things they do and how it all comes together. I'm not religious. But I have a conundrum. How do I explain my near death experience? Read more... (209 comments, 1343 words in story) by In Wales

Our various countries have their various political institutions and their professional politicians (in some cases) and their civil servants. But surely politics is broader than that?
Who 'does' politics? Just the politicians? Whose voices count and where is the power? When you make a choice around whether or not you buy GM food or boycott Israeli goods, or buy 'greener' or organic alternatives, how much does that count? I am one person. Do my private individual choices have an influence on public policy? Do they only have an influence when many thousands of others make their voice heard as consumers? Does this still not even count? An editorial in today's Guardian entitled It takes two to talk peace is an interesting one looking at the dialogue between Labour and the unions at the moment.
It points out that as the TUC begins it's annual Congress, there are few parallels between now and 30 years ago where the UK was on the brink of the Winter of Discontent, other than Labour's popularity freefalling.
The minimum wage, family-friendly working and better protection for vulnerable workers are some of the results [of fruitful conversation between Labour and the Unions]. But other union demands, particularly on support for low-paid public sector workers and the return of some of the rights stripped away after 1979 (secondary picketing and simpler pre-strike balloting), have met a frostier response. And if the unions had little leverage on the government in the prosperous years, they will have even less so in recession, when rising unemployment and their members' financial anxieties undermine their strength. A good friend of mine told me about Terezin when he knew I was to visit Prague and I was easily convinced that I should go. I'm glad I did since it was extremely worthwhile and I felt it important to share and to encourage others to go should they get a chance. There was a lot to see, hence the length of the diary so I apologise for clogged browsers. The album link is here.
I think it is a topic that people are split over, whether it is just too morbid to visit such a place, balanced against the need to ensure the atrocities are never forgotten is paramount. Read more... (11 comments, 1506 words in story) by In Wales

A whirlwind tour of Prague, Frankfurt and Cologne, whilst continuing reading Sophie's World, has informed and inspired me immensely.
I'd probably a total nightmare to travel with were I to drag others around as if I were travelling alone. Prague involved a 5am start one day to get to Charles Bridge before the tourists arrived to clutter my photos with their inelegance. I walked for miles and miles, fitting in as much as possible and not taking any breaks during the day beyond lunch, or grabbing a bottle of water en route to the next sight. Something that afew will no doubt have something to say about given my obvious exhaustion by the time I turned up on his doorstep.
My obsessive documentation of interesting angles on everything I see through the camera lens in the quest to get a shot of that building/construction/thing that would somehow stand out from the millions of other similar shots in people's photo albums all across the world, would drive most people up the wall if they had to put up with that for too long. Firstly, all kudos to Barbara who had the brilliant idea of;
European Tribune - August 16 Prague ET meetup - venue having lunch at the Municipal House (Obecní dům) on náměstí Republiky (also a Metro station).
Secondly, it rained and following much discussion over beer we reached the conclusion that it rains at all meet ups where Brits are present, therefore it is our fault.

I've been skipping around in circles and not finalising any travel plans so far, so this will be the week to sort it all out.
Ok, plans are sorted and diary bumped to remind us all what we are up to.

Some of you may be aware that I have been intending to hold a photography exhibition to coincide with my 30th birthday in November.
I have so far held off announcing anything because I did not know what I would base the exhibition around. But now, I have a vision! I won't tell you what it is but I would like to suggest a meet up in Cardiff on saturday November 29th. Read more... (14 comments, 179 words in story)
